RFID
RFID Software Market Heats Up

The RFID middleware global market, which exceeded $24 million in 2005, will soar to more than $190 million within five years, according to a new report.

The landscape of the market is changing as mergers and acquisitions continue, larger players seek to increase their total available markets and new competition emerges, independent technology market research firm Venture Development said in its annual RFID Business Planning Service report. The RFID middleware landscape includes pure-play architecture competitors, such as RF Code, GlobeRanger and Vizional, which focus solely on RFID, the report stated. Key features of this computing architecture include a smaller footprint to enable scalability, speed, accessibility and flexibility.

Companies that include IBM, Microsoft, SAP and Sun Microsystems are classified as opportunistic architecture competitors. Long-term corporate strategies that include the use of RFID across business processes will require such an approach, in contrast to a stand-alone RFID middleware platform. The report also mentioned network architecture competitors, such as Cisco Systems, Blue Vector and Omnitrol, who embrace the idea that readers are ‘edge devices’ on new, vastly distributed networks.

According to Venture Development, mergers and acquisitions will continue over the next three up to five years. And while major mergers and acquisitions from 2005 include NCR’s purchase of IC Velocity and BEA Systems purchase of Connecterra, firms such as IBM and webMethods are expected to either push out their solutions to the ‘edge’ by acquiring, merging or partnering with smaller pure-play middleware vendors such as OATSystems and GlobeRanger.
